No, Angie, you apparently misread the post and all the replies to it.
1. Post is simply reporting the first service dog census project.
2. On Call wondered if it would include service-dogs that are owner-trained.
3. servicedogcensus replied back to On Call that owner-trained dogs are welcome and OnCall said thanks.
4. Pami mentioned a website she found that has patches and capes etc for owner-trained (as well as organization-trained) service dogs.
5. I requested the URL, and Pami came back and gave it
6. Fred pointed out that those who self-train their service dog need to be sure they understand the ADA and all the regulations and nuances involved.
7. Jack wants to see a multiplicity of training organizations
8. I cautioned that people should work through the ADI (Assistance Dogs International) and IAADP (International Association of Assistance Dog Partners). I also opined that ADA requiring each Service Dog meet the criteria for or actually earn the Canine Good Citizen Award (basic obedience) would be a good thing.

Nowhere in the post or in any of the replies did anyone offer to train someone else's dog. Now that I have received my service dog, Emmy, I know that there is no way I could train my own! I don't have the temperament to train puppies from scratch.

As to recommending my blog - that's up to you.

by the way, this blog is over. Now that Emmy and I are partners, check out http://livingwiththewoof.wordpress.com

Are you offering to pay for the training of my service dog??? Please be careful what you wish for. You have NO idea the potential negative impact of what you are recommending. There are pros and cons to EVERYTHING in our society. Check out this website psychdog.org .

Fred, you could benefit from reading info on this site too. Your quote about plural tasks is not accurate, there is more to the statement which you omitted.

Just found this site during a search for information to help others do research to help them acquire their own service animal. Not so sure I would be able to recommend it.
Me, I'm a 20 year active duty Air Force retiree. Also a disabled veteran. If Obama followed your suggestion, I would be dead.

Jack, I think working through ADI and IAADP would be better. These organizations are set up for being the advocates of service dogs and their partners.

A regulation by ADA requiring all service dogs to earn the Canine Good Citizen Certificate as well as to be certified *every year* by an ADI person would do it. ADI certification includes rechecking basic obedience as well as testing for the specific behaviors the individual needs. A certification requirement would be all that's needed.

Think about it!

Many states have the same accommodation, but not all. Even in those without the legal accommodation, many mbusinesses will permit service-dogs-in-training to use their facilities - briefly - for training purposes.

My SD in training is totally by companion. The longest we've ever been apart is 2 hours. Anywhere I am, Kenai is. Just having him near is reassuring, relaxing, and encouraging. Assistance animals are also outstanding emotional support animals too.

People that have self-train their own service dog and service animal need to read all the ADA law and ADI laws on service dogs and service animals and also read the Fair Housing Act. Before You start training a dog or animal to be a service dog, service animal then you will know the right laws and train your dog or animal right! Or don't get one if you can't do this! It makes it hard on other people that self-train their service dog or service animal the right way by law!

ADA says tasks not task what does (S) mean more then one so you see if they only know one task they can't be out in public as a service dog or service animal and they are just a pet not a working animal!!

And for people that use a epi-pen and have a service dog she has a patch out that says Epi-pen Responds Dog And in the last two week she came out with more new patches. She has the most service dog patches then any other service dog website has to pick from. Go online to Pup'parel let her know Pami sent you. Take a look at all patches before ordering, past the word on please.

Dear Rina -

A "companion dog" is not the same thing as a service dog, and does not have rights to access in public places (restaurants, stores, hospitals, clinics, etc). A service dog does specific, definable tasks for an individual. For instance, the guide dog leads a blind person safely around obstacles, the hearing alert dog alerts the hearing impaired of noises that indicate a response is needed (doorbell, phone, someone calling your name), and the mobility service dog retrieves objects and helps get things for the partner.

Psychological support dogs currently do not legally have public access, even though they may be essential to the partner being able to be in public. That isn't to say that many are caped and taken into public places anyway. But is isn't legal.

If your neighbor's MD will recommend a service dog for specific reasons and which will have specific tasks, that would be a different thing.
